Kayaking Bayou St. John: New Orleans’ Easiest Paddle

2 min read

Kayaking the calm waters of Bayou St. John in New Orleans

Not every paddle needs a swamp. Bayou St. John runs four miles through the middle of New Orleans, from near City Park down toward Lake Pontchartrain, and it’s the spot for an easy urban paddle: no current, no boat traffic to speak of, and you’re never more than a few hundred feet from a coffee shop.

Why paddle here

It’s the low-commitment option. You can be on the water 15 minutes after deciding to go, paddle an hour at sunset past Mid-City porches and the old Spanish Custom House, and be done in time for dinner. Locals throw paddle picnics here; visitors use it as a warm-up before committing to a full swamp trip.

Practical notes

When you’re ready for the real swamp

Bayou St. John is a great first paddle, but the cypress swamps are why people fly here. When you want the full experience, start with our guide to Manchac Swamp kayaking or the best swamp tours comparison.
